Jalandhar

 

Jalandhar is a city in Jalandhar District in the state of Punjab, India. The district has various stories of its origin. According to one version, in Hindu mythology Jalandhara was the eponymous kingdom of a devil in Satyuga., who finds a mention in the Puranas and Mahabharata. According to another legend, Jalandhar was the capital of the kingdom of Lav, son of Rama. According to yet another version Jalandhar is said to have derived its name from the vernacular term `Jalandhar’ means area inside the water, i.e. tract lying between the two rivers Satluj and Beas, still another name of Jalandhar had been Trigartta, as it was by the waters of three rivers, Satluj, Beas and Ravi. The Jalandhar Doab (the region surrounding the city between Beas and Sutlej rivers) also marked the eastern most territory of the empire of Alexander the Great.

 

How to Get There:
By Air: There is no airport in Jalandhar but the nearest airport is in Amritsar at a distance of 100 km. There are many airlines operating from Amritsar airport connecting it to Europe, North America and the Middle East.
By Rail: Jalandhar is well connected by trains, including a Shatabdi train from Delhi to Amritsar via Jalandhar.
By Road: Jalandhar is easy accessible by buses plying from all over the North India. There are many interstate buses connecting the city to the major towns of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan.
Climate: The city has a humid subtropical climate with cool winters and hot summers. Summers last from April to June and winters from November to February. Temperatures in summer vary from average highs of around 48 °C to average lows of around 25 °C. Winter temperatures vary from highs of 19 °C to lows of -5 °C. The climate is dry except during the brief south-west monsoons during July-August. The average annual rainfall is about 70 cm.

What to See: Devi Talab Mandir, in the heart of Jalandhar City; Tulsi Mandir, the temple of Vrinda, wife of Jalandhara; Shiv Mandir, situated at Gur Mandi, is reputed to have been built by a Nawab of Sultanpur Lodhi near Masjid Imam Nasar; Gurdwara Chhevin Padshahi: Guru Hargobind visited the city of Jalandhar during his tour of Doaba area. Gurdwara Chhevin Padshahi in Basti Shaikh, Jalandhar city, stands on the spot where the Guruji granted an interview to a Muslim holy saint popularly known as Shaikh Darvesh. St Mary’s Cathedral Church (Jalandhar Cantt), the church dedicated to St. Patrick was built by Rev. Fr. John Mcdonnel, Q.F.M.CAP of the Vicariate Apostolic of Agra, in 1947 at the same site of the old church (1886). It was looked after by various chaplains appointed to Jalandhar from the Diocese of Lahore. Kartarpur Gurudwara, Kartarpur located 16km from Jalandhar is famous for its Gurudwara built by the Fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjun Devji in 1656 CE and Moorish Mosque, in Kapurthala about 21 km from Jalandhar.
