Indore

 

Indore situated on the Malwa plateau at an altitude of 553 m above sea level, on the banks of two small rivulets - the Saraswati and the Khan, is a major city and commercial centre of the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. Indore city has a population of 1,94,000 making it the most populous city in Madhya Pradesh, the 15th largest city in India and the 147th largest city in the world. It is the headquarters of both Indore district and Indore division. Indore ranks no. 22 on the ‘best cities to live in India’ list. The Saraswati and the Khan unite at the centre of the city where a small 18th century temple of Sangamnath or Indreshwar exists. The name Indore comes from this deity.

 

How to Get There:
By Air: Indore has a domestic airport, the Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport, which is to be upgraded to International status. As an airport, it is well laid out and rated excellent. It is connected to Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Gwalior, Nagpur, Bhopal, Ahmedabad, Raipur, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Kolkata, Pune and Jabalpur. The city is less than 10 km away.
By Rail: Indore is connected to major indian cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Howrah, Bhopal, Ujjain, Gwalior, Bhind, Jabalpur, Bilaspur, Khandwa, Lucknow, Varanasi, Patna, Ambala Ct, Jammu, Dehradun and Trivandrum. Indore has both Metre Gauge(MG) and Broad Gauge(BG) lines. Khandwa and Ratlam are two major railway junctions linked through Metre Gauge
By Road: Two national highways, Mumbai-Agra and Indore-Ahmedabad pass through Indore and there are daily bus services from Indore to Mumbai, Jaipur, Gwalior, Bhopal, etc. Use the deluxe buses run by civil contractors.

Where to Stay: Hotel Crown Palace, Hotel Shreemaya, Surya Hotel, Sayaji Hotel, Shreemaya Residency, Lemon Tree Hotel, Fortune Landmark Hotel, Hotel Amar Vilas, Signature Crest,
Hotel Crown Plaza, Hotel Kanchan, Hotel President, Hotel Kalinga and Hotel Rajshahi are among the better class of hotels. Hotel Kanchan is a budget hotel.
What to See: Rajawada,a 200 year old seven-storey historic palace of the Holkars; Lal Baag Palace, a grand monument of the Holkars; Bada Ganpati, this temple houses the largest Ganesh idol in the world, 8 m tall; Kanch Mandir, a Jain temple, is an eyecatching revelation in glass; Town Hall; Central Museum ; Chhatris, tombs or cenotaphs of rulers; Khajrana Ganesh Temple and Gomatgiri, a Jain temple 10-12 km away from the city.
Where to Eat: Chappan Dukaan (located at the heart of city), Little Italy (Authentic vegetarian Italian cuisine offers delectable Italian and Mexican food), Shreemaya (One of the oldest hotels of the city, offers good food in its restaurant. Although the staff is just up to par, the food here is amazing and makes up for it), Celebration (A favourite place for young crowd and even families. They offer great food at excellent prices, and is a self service food joint.) Indigo Food Junction, Pizza Hut and Mc Donalds (located at Treasure Island Mall on MG Road.), Rajdhani (Located at the food court of Treasure Island this restaurant offers Gujarati Thali. A family restaurant) and Nafees are worth the money.
