Guwahati

 

Guwahati is a major commercial and educational centre of North-East India and a major centre for cultural activities and sports in the North Eastern region and for the administrative and political activities of Assam. The city is an important transportation hub in the North East.

 

By Air: Guwahati Airport is connected to the rest of India, i.e. Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi. A Mumbai-Bangkok flight halts here once a week. Smaller aircraft connect Silchar, Dimapur, Dibrugarh, Aizawl, Imphal and Agartala. Shillong and Tura are connected by scheduled commercial helicopter services (Pawan Hans). By Rail: Railway infrastructure is on the limited side, mainly due to the annual flooding, but major cities are connected. Guwahati is connected by train with major cities like Kolkata, New Delhi, Bangalore, Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai and Mumbai.
By Road: Roads that are maintained by the civil authorities are poor; those maintained by the military and Border Roads Organisation are excellent. Three national highways pass through Guwahati. It is connected to all major cities of North East India by bus. There are overnight bus services for Kohima, Imphal, Itanagar, Siliguri.
Moving Around: Lack of road space is a major problem. Despite this handicap, Guwahati has a decent public transit system.

Where to Stay: Hotel Nova, Landmark, Hotel President, Hotel RajMahal, Belle View, Hotel Vishwaratna, Hotel Maruti, Hotel Rituraj, Hotel Rialto and Hotel Dynasty are recommended.
What to See: Uma Nanda Temple, A 17th century temple dedicated to Shiva. Umananda temple is on an island in the middle of the Brahmaputra river-Peacock island. You need to hire a boat.
Janardana Temple, Ugro Tara Temple, Lotaxil, dedicated to the deity Tara; Assam State Museum; Guwahati Planetarium; Assam Rajyik Museum; Regional Science Centre; Navagraha Temple, Chitrasal Hill, an 18th century temple dedicated to nine celestial bodies; Kamakhya Temple; Bhubaneswari Temple; Vashistha Ashram, a holy place in the Sandhychal hills and the Botanical Gardens.
Where to Eat: Tandoor Brindavan, JBs at M G Road, JBs at Christian Basti, Dispur Dhaba, U turn, Momo ghar, Green Valley Resort, Delicacy, Makhonbhog, Gopal Maharaj and GAM's Delicacy.
